I’ve been a crusty lip girl all my life. My lips need constant hydration and moisture. Unlike most people who experience chapped lips only in the winter, my lips put me through a year long ordeal with their innate crustiness, SMH!
I was on a lip balm hunt online one day, but all I wanted was one product, i.e., a lip balm only, and didn’t really want to pay a hefty shipping fee to get just a lip balm delivered to me. So, I decided to go explore Boots Pharmacy, which is available at various locations and malls in the UAE.
My first choice was a lip balm from Palmers – The Cocoa Butter Formula. But it didn’t work for me, it made my lips itch terribly, probably because of the mint flavoring or some other ingredient I’m really not sure. I wrote an article about it, do check it out here – https://thesissociate.com/2019/12/12/palmers-lip-balm-made-my-lips-itchy-ko/
On my second run, I discovered the QV skincare’s lip balm and I haven’t changed my brand ever since. I am probably on my 7th tube and on my last purchase I bought 4 tubes – one for my office bag, one for home, one by the night stand and one as back up.

I just love this balm, for multiple reasons. It ticks a lot of boxes for me. It is very hydrating and nourishing and the perfect lip care for my regularly crusty lips. It has no irritating ingredients like menthol / peppermint etc. (These ingredients may work for some, but my experience with minty flavors in lip balms has not been so great). It’s fragrance free. In addition to this it also provides Sun Protection (SPF 30 UVA and UVB protection). It just couldn’t be better.
QV Skincare is the brainchild of Ego Pharmaceuticals (Ego), which was founded in 1953 by young chemist, Gerald Oppenheim, and his wife, Rae, a nurse. It was in response to a request from the dermatology ward of Melbourne’s iconic Queen Victoria Hospital, that Gerald Oppenheim created a specialist skincare product that would later become known as QV Bath Oil (named in honor of the hospital). They have a wide range of products especially formulated for sensitive skin. And one such product is their lip balm which I absolutely love.
It works best when you reapply every two hours or so, which I cannot do while I am work because that would mean turning my matte lipsticks into a mess, which I don’t quite like. But on days I’m home, I make it a point to apply this every now and then. I also do a weekly, sometimes fortnightly scrub using this lip balm and some sugar as a periodical exfoliating routine.
